Adoption is an exciting and often nerve-wracking process.  There are also many different types of adoption, and navigating the legal process can be tricky.  The initial step to legally finalizing an adoption is to file a petition for adoption in court.  After the petition is filed, you will appear before the judge with the child to be adopted at an initial presentment, and Guardian ad Litem will be appointed to represent your child’s best interests. The Guardian ad Litem will perform an investigation, and a criminal background check will be done, as well.  Depending on whether your adoption is contested (no agreement) or uncontested (agreement or no other parent to dispute), will dictate the next steps of the adoption process.
